Initially, the weather in the Mount Huangshan area was clear, but a sudden thunderstorm caught everyone by surprise. One eyewitness recalled that she and her colleagues had planned to visit the Xihai Grand Canyon, but were informed that there was a storm ahead; soon after, they were struck by lightning.
The same eyewitness described how, on her way back, she saw a woman who had been hit by a rock dislodged by the lightning strike in a pavilion on the path to the Flying Stone, who sustained significant injuries. Other tourists descending from the Flying Stone also suffered minor scrapes.
There were also tourists who captured video of stones shattered by the lightning around the Flying Stone.
After the incident, a tour guide disclosed to reporters that although he had already left the area around the Flying Stone, his colleague's group of tourists suffered a lightning strike in the afternoon, leading to damaged raincoats and some tourists even being hit on the head by falling rocks. Medical staff from the scenic area quickly responded to provide treatment.
The staff of Mount Huangshan scenic area made it clear that the weather near the Flying Stone is complex, and it is in a lightning-prone zone. On that day, two lightning warnings had been issued.
On the evening of May 26th, the relevant organizations of Mount Huangshan scenic area issued a statement confirming a lightning strike incident on the afternoon of May 25th. The scenic area immediately launched an emergency rescue plan; rescue personnel swiftly reached the scene and successfully evacuated 13 tourists who were injured or felt unwell to a hospital at the foot of the mountain for treatment. After treatment, except for one tourist who was transferred to another hospital for further treatment of burns, the other individuals have been discharged and returned home.
As a result, the Flying Stone attraction was temporarily closed, and specialized personnel will be organized to conduct on-site inspections and repairs. At the same time, the scenic area is also investigating the related issues of this event and is working on strengthening lightning forecast, warning, and emergency prevention measures.
